Elpida begins large scale production of DDR2 SDRAM on 70nm

Elpida Memory, Inc., a manufacturer of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) silicon chips, on Monday announced that it has started a large-scale production of 1-Gb and 512-Mb DDR2 SDRAMs using 70-nanometer process technology.

The manufacturing of DRAM industry’s first 1 Gb and 512 Mb DDR2 SDRAMs using 70 nm process technology will be done at Elpida’s main fab plant, Hiroshima Elpida Memory, Inc.

First shipments of the computer memory chips will likely begin in the first quarter of 2007, said the Tokyo, Japan based leading provider of advanced DRAM products.

The chips can be used in appliances such as high-end servers which require processing of large amounts of data, high-performance mobile equipment, high definition digital TVs (HDTVs) and next-generation DVD recorders, digital single-lens reflex cameras and other digital consumer equipment that must have advanced image processing capabilities, Elpida said.

The Japanese memory maker is currently accomplishing high yields and output from its 90nm process technology used in mass production. The same technology has been hired for the development of the more advanced 70nm process technology, the company said.

Elpida offers the DDR2 chips in 800MHz and 1GHz frequency, and the 70nm process technology the company said enables their speed functionality in combination with high-performance operations. At the same time, the 70nm technology has made possible the world's smallest chip size for a 512Mb DDR2 SDRAM.

Elpida intends to make the intensive use of its new 70nm process technology in the production of Mobile RAM for mobile phones and other mobile equipment. The company also wants to utilize the technology in memory products used in high-end digital consumer equipment and across the entire server/PC market.
