Just a few days before Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and girlfriend Kim Porter were blessed with twin daughters. Celebration time is over for Diddy as he has landed himself in a kettle of fish for using canine fur in his collection of clothing.

The mass spectrometry test conducted by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) released the results today and concluded that Sean John’s Hooded Snorkel Jacket sold on Macys.com was not made of faux fur, but by the fur of certain species of dogs called ‘raccoon dogs’.

"First these jackets were falsely advertised as faux fur, and then it turned out that the fur came from a type of dog," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States.

Pacelle added that the issue is an "industry-wide problem" and its investigation demonstrated that retailers and designers "aren't paying close enough attention to the fur trim they are selling." He added that the issue is especially problematic when "the fur is sourced from China where domestic dogs and cats and raccoon dogs are killed in gruesome ways."

As soon as the results were revealed, Macy’s, a chain of American Departmental stores, pulled down the two styles of Sean’s jackets from the store shelves and from the website.

Macy’s has even asked all the retailers to pull down Sean John’s mislabeled garments from their respective stores.

Raccoon dogs are indigenous to East Asia. They are so named due to their superficial resemblance with non-canidae raccoon. The animal carries historical and cultural importance in Japan, and is also known under the Japanese name tanuki.

Orlando Veras, a spokesman at Macy's, a division of Federated Department Stores Inc., informed that the jackets have been pulled from all retail stores and released a statement saying that it has a "long-standing policy against the selling of any dog or cat fur." He continued, "This policy is clearly communicated to all suppliers."

The HSUS has conducted the mass spectrometry test on the garments of a number of retailers and designers such as Burlington Coat Factory, Bloomingdale's, J.C. Penney, Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Baby Phat, Andrew Marc, MaxMara, and Calvin Klein. They revealed that the garments sold by them all contain the fur of raccoon dogs.

Most of the fur products in United States are exported by China. This is due to the lack of animal welfare laws and dominance of the garment industry in China.

A number of animals including dogs, cats, foxes, mink, etc. are reared and killed in China to meet the demands of exporting fur.

An HSUS search in China in 1998 exposed that fur sellers in China will attach almost any label their customers want on their coats.

The Fur Products Labeling Act disallows the sale of any fur product that is wrongly or deceptively labeled. Criminal penalties, imposing fines of up to $5,000 per violation and to seize mislabeled products of the guilty, is vested in the hands of the Federal Trade Commission.

The Dog and Cat Protection Act, which bans the sale of dog and cat fur in the United States, have been requested to be modified. The HSUS wants the Congress to include raccoon dogs in the act as well since they are killed so inhumanly and are similar to domesticated dogs.

"It would be jarring to the public to shop in a marketplace where dog and cat fur is banned, but coats labeled as 'raccoon dog' are still legally sold," added Pacelle.

“Each year, over 50 million animals worldwide, such as dogs, cats, raccoon dogs, mink, foxes, bobcats, beavers, raccoons, and lynx, are killed for their fur”.

The HSUS’s fur-free campaign encourages designers to design non fur garments and completely reject the use of animal fur. By supporting fur-free designers, sponsoring fashion design contests and advertising in industry publications, HSUS discourages the killing of animals for fur.

HSUS, founded in 1954, is the largest animal welfare organization with nearly 10 million members and constituents. HSUS does not run any animal shelters in the USA and are not affiliated with local county animal shelters, but they protect animals through education, investigation, litigation, legislation, advocacy and field work.

In a statement by Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs released by his publicist Hampton Carney, the designer said: "I was completely unaware of the nature of this material, but as soon as we were alerted, the garments were pulled off the Macy's floor and Web site. I have instructed our outerwear licensee to cease the production of any garments using this material immediately."
