U.S. anthem music sets auction record

New York -- A New York auction house said first-edition sheet music for "The Star-Spangled Banner" sold or $506,500, double what it was estimated to fetch on the block.

Christie's Auction House said the two-page piece of sheet music, printed in 1814 in Baltimore, was purchased by a private U.S. collector for $506,500, making it the most expensive piece of sheet music ever sold at auction, The Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday.

"It's always great when something goes over its estimate," Christie's spokeswoman Sung-Hee Park said, "and when it makes for a world auction record, that's icing on the cake."

Park said the buyer wished to remain anonymous. She said the piece of sheet music is believed to be one of only 11 still in existence and the only one to be privately owned.
