Embree hired as new Colorado coach

Boulder, Colo. -- Colorado University has hired Jon Embree as its next head football coach, school officials said Sunday.

Embree, currently the tight ends coach for the Washington Redskins, will be introduced as the Buffaloes' 24th mentor at a Monday press conference.

Embree, 45, was a former Colorado tight end and logged a long stint as an assistant coach in Boulder from 1993 to 2002. He also coached for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2006-08 and with UCLA from 2003-05.

He replaces Dan Hawkins, who was fired Nov. 9 after a five-game losing streak.

Brian Cabral then stepped in as interim Buffaloes coach, finishing up a 5-7 season in Colorado's last year as part of the Big 12 Conference. The school will join a newly expanded Pac-12 next season.
