Lance Berkman signs with St. Louis

St. Louis -- Lance Berkman, traded by Houston to the New York Yankees in the middle of the 2010 season, signed a one-year contract Saturday with St. Louis.

Berkman will play in the outfield for the Cardinals after spending most of his recent seasons at first base. Superstar lugger Albert Pujols is a fixture at first base for St. Louis.

Berkman, 34, has played 871 games in the outfield during his 12-year career. He has been an All-Star five times and is fourth among active players in on-base percentage (.409).

"We are extremely excited to have added Lance to our club," St. Louis General Manager John Mozeliak said. "He's an impact player who not only helps solidify our everyday lineup, but he also brings a wealth experience to our team."

Berkman hit .248 last season with 14 homers and 58 RBI in 122 games with Houston and New York. He has hit .296 for his career with 327 home runs and 1,099 RBI.
