Both teams had a seven-game winning streak coming into the game and the Mavericks kept their run going by holding Utah to 39 percent shooting on its home floor.
Dallas is tied with Orlando and Boston for the second-best record in the NBA (15-4), one game behind San Antonio.
The Mavericks had a five-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter, but began to pull away when Jason Terry hit a jumper 29 seconds into the period. Nowitzki followed with a 3-pointer and then hit a jump shot. Shawn Marion contributed a dunk and J.J. Barea finished the run with a layup that gave Dallas a 78-62 lead with 9:09 to play.
Caron Butler had 16 points for Dallas, Jason Kidd had 15 and Terry scored 12.
Utah lost for the first time since Nov. 19, when they suffered a 12-point setback to San Antonio. It was only the third loss for the Jazz in 16 games.
Paul Millsap led Utah with 21 points.
