Sleeping driver wakes, plunges into pool

North Lauderdale, Fla. -- Authorities in Florida say a man sleeping in his idling car sped into a pool when he was awakened by deputies.

Broward County sheriff's spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion said deputies spotted Charles Marckenson sleeping in his idling car about 5:40 a.m. Thursday outside his home at Park Plaza Apartments in North Lauderdale, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Monday.

Concepcion said Marckenson woke up when deputies tapped on his window and he put his car into gear. Deputies called for him to stop as he slowly moved forward. Instead, they say, he punched the gas and sped through a playground and a wall surrounding a neighboring apartment complex before plunging into a pool.

The spokeswoman said the deputies smashed Marckenson's windows and pulled him from the pool. Toxicology reports are pending to determine whether he was intoxicated, she said.
