Nowitzki was 13-of-23 from the field and 13-of-16 from the free-throw line in leading the Mavericks to their second consecutive win.
Jason Terry scored 16 points on 17 shots and Caron Butler added 11.
Detroit was led by Tayshaun Prince and Rodney Stuckey, who scored 19 apiece. Richard Hamilton had an off night with five points on 1-of-7 shooting.
The Pistons, who have lost three of four, were in control much of the game after a slow start in the first quarter. They led 61-56 after three quarters but were outscored 32-23 in the fourth quarter.
Nowitzki hit two free throws at 6:30 to knot the game at 70 with 6:30 to play. He added a 3-pointer and mid-range jumper to give the Mavericks the lead for good.
