Hernandez, 24, was just 13-12 on the year for a team that lost 101 games, but he had a major leagues-best 2.27 earned run average and led the American League in innings pitched (249 2/3). The Mariners managed just seven runs in Hernandez's 12 losses.
He grabbed late-season attention by giving up just eight earned runs over his last 10 starts in becoming the first starting pitcher to win the Cy Young Award with fewer than 16 wins.
Hernandez was listed first on 21 of the 28 ballots submitted by members of the Baseball Writers Association of America and was second on two, took three third-place mentions, one fourth and two fifth-place showings for a total of 167 points, the BBWAA said Thursday.
Tampa's Davis Price, with four first-place votes, was second with 111 points and New York's CC Sabathia, who got the other three first-place votes, finished third with 102 points.
The BBWAA expanded its Cy Young ballot to five pitchers this year, giving seven points for a first-place mention, five for a second, three for being name third, two for a fourth-place vote and one for fifth.
