Vandeweghe to lead off for U.S. in Fed Cup

San Diego -- Coco Vandeweghe, a professional for 18 months, was given the first match for the United States in the Fed Cup final against Italy.

Vandeweghe, who turns 19 next month, will go against French Open champion Francesca Schiavone, a 30-year-old veteran of 12 professional seasons.

That match kicks off the best-of-five Fed Cup final in San Diego.

Saturday's other singles match has U.S. player Bethanie Mattek-Sands facing Italy's Flavia Pennetta.

Sunday's schedule calls for reverse singles with Mattek-Sands playing Schiavone and Vandeweghe going against Pennetta.

If a fifth match is needed to decide the Fed Cup, U.S. doubles specialist Liezel Huber is to team with Melanie Oudin against Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani.

The United States has won the Fed Cup 17 times but hasn't been champion since 2000. Italy beat the United States 4-0 in last year's finals. This is Italy's fourth finals appearance in five years. The Italians won in 2006 in addition to 2009.
