Fresno, Nevada to stay in WAC 1 more year

Engelewood, Colo. -- Fresno State and Nevada will delay their membership with the Mountain West Conference under a deal with the Western Athletic Conference.

Fresno State and Nevada but said this summer they were leaving the WAC and would compete in the Mountain West beginning next fall.

But WAC officials said that move violated conference bylaws and initiated legal action to stop the move.

A statement from the WAC office Thursday said the school will each pay the conference $900,000 and wouldn't join the Mountain West until the 2012-13 academic year.

Boise State also decided to leave the WAC for the Mountain West, a change effective next fall. Because Boise State beat a July 1 deadline for notification, that move is going ahead unchallenged.

Fresno State has been a member of the WAC since 1992. Nevada joined in 2000.

The Mountain West invited Fresno State and Nevada to join the same day Brigham Young University said it was leaving the conference to become an independent in football and complete in the WAC in other sports.
