Mayor candidate tries for scuba record

Groveland, Fla. -- A Florida man running for mayor of his town is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for longest scuba dive by spending seven days underwater.

Allen Sherrod, who served as a Groveland City Councilman from 2004 to 2009, began his attempt Sunday and has spent the ensuing days 10 feet below the surface of Lake David, WOFL-TV, Orlando, Fla., reported Tuesday.

"He's doing well. At times the cold has some impact until we get some warm fluids in him. With your body temp at 98 and water temperature at 86 that difference does take a toll on the body after awhile," safety diver Larry Berry said.

Sherrod said before his dive that he hopes the attempt will raise awareness of keeping local freshwater lakes clean. He and his safety divers have been picking up trash at the bottom of the lake.
