Final U.S. men's hope Querrey ousted

New York -- Sam Querrey, the final American in the men's U.S. Open singles, fell to Stanislas Wawrinka Tuesday in a 4 1/2-hour fourth-round match.

The 25th-seeded Wawrinka outlasted Querrey 7-6, 6-7, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, in a back-and-forth epic. The Swiss, who beat No. 4 Andy Murray in the third round, broke Querrey's serve in the final game to move into the quarterfinals.

Querrey's defeat ensured that no Americans would make the U.S. Open men's quarterfinals for the second straight year. That had never happened in the open era prior to 2009.

Women's player Venus Williams remained the only American in singles competition after Querrey's defeat.

Also Tuesday, 12th-seeded former semifinalist Mikhail Youzhny defeated Spaniard Tommy Robredo 7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to gain the quarters.

Youzhny racked up four service breaks to only one for Robredo, who was the lowest-ranked man (41st) still standing in New York.

The Russian now goes on to face Wawrinka.
