Harvick, who became the first driver to earn a position in the championship Chase with the victory, passed Denny Hamlin late in the race and then held him off, notching a 1.7-second win.
Harvick nailed down his third victory of the season and the 14th of his Sprint Cup Series career, winning at Michigan for the first time in 20 career races there.
Third place went to Carl Edwards. Roush Fenway Racing teammates Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth ended in the fourth and fifth spots respectively.
Harvick's performance gave him a 293-point lead over Jeff Gordon in the Sprint Cup standings.
