Federer, who won the event in 2004 and 2006, defeated Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela 7-6 (9-7), 6-3. Federer, playing in his first tournament since losing in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in June, raised his lifetime record against Chela to 5-0.
French Open runner-up Soderling downed Latvia's Ernests Gulbis 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in another first-round match.
Berdych, seeded seventh, breezed past Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2, 6-4 in a 90-minute match at Rexall Centre to gain the second round.
Also among the early winners were unseeded Argentine David Nalbandian, who, fresh off a victory in Washington, stayed hot by upending 10th-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
Nalbandian's opponent in last week's final, Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis, succumbed to France's Jeremy Chardy 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) in Toronto Tuesday.
No. 8 seed Andy Roddick, meanwhile, pulled out of the tournament citing illness. The former world No. 1 -- who won this Canadian event in 2003 and was the runner-up in 2002 and 2004 -- had gained a bye into the second round.
