The second five-hit game of Mauer's career was highlighted by a three-run blast to left field that put the Twins up 17-0 on a night when they pounded out a season-high 20 hits.

Danny Valencia socked a grand-slam homer -- his first major-league round-tripper -- went 4-for-4 and scored four times and Delmon Young collected four hits to raise his average to .328 in the Minnesota onslaught.

Francisco Liriano (9-7) allowed only three hits in seven shutout innings, the second straight start in which the Minnesota lefty hasn't yielded a run.

The victory was the fifth in six games for the Twins and enabled them to stay a game behind first-place Chicago in the American League Central.

Royals starter Zack Greinke (6-10) was battered for eight runs on eight hits in four innings.
