Royals lose DeJesus for the season

New York -- The Kansas City Royals announced Friday center fielder David DeJesus would be lost for the rest of the season due to a ligament tear in his right thumb.

DeJesus suffered the injury Thursday while trying to make a catch against the wall of a long drive off the bat of New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter.

The ball eluded DeJesus and Jeter turned it into the second inside-the-park home run of his career.

The Royals originally announced DeJesus had suffered only a sprained and that X-rays were negative. Further examination revealed he would require surgery to repair the damage.

DeJesus ended his season with a .318 batting average and 37 RBI in 91 games.
