Golubev beats German Open No. 1 seed

Golubev won 73 percent of the points when he got his first serve in during his 6-4, 6-4 win over Davydenko. Golubev was particularly effective in the first set when he dropped only six points in five service games.

He advances to the quarterfinals against Denis Istomin, whose 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win over Julian Reister took move than 2 hours. Istomin had 11 aces and has 28 aces in his three matches in Hamburg.

Third-seeded Jurgen Melzer topped Jeremy Chardy 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) while Potito Starace earned a Friday quarterfinal slot against Melzer with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Pere Riba.

No. 6-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero will go against Florian Mayer in the quarterfinals. Ferrero battled though a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 decision over Jarkko Nieminen while Mayer was a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 winner over Maximo Gonzalez.

Seventh-seeded Thomaz Bellucci topped 10th-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-5, 6-4 and Andreas Seppi beat Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-4 in setting up the fourth quarterfinal match.
