Daniel Gimeno-Traver took Davydenko out 7-6 (9-7), 2-6, 6-1 with a third-set effort in which he won 62 percent of the points. Davydenko, ranked sixth in the world, is the first Top 10 player to lose to the No. 88-ranked Gimeno-Traver.
Third-seeded Gael Monfils escaped an upset with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over Pablo Andujar. Monfils lost just three points in five service games in the decisive third set and grabbed a spot in Friday's quarterfinals.
No. 4-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero came through in a must-win tie-breaker and then finished off a 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 decision over Horacio Zeballos. The match was suspended because of darkness Wednesday before the second-set tie-breaker began.
Also, Thursday, Marco Chiudinelli topped Bjorn Phau 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 and Florian Mayer defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-1.
Friday's quarterfinals have No. 2-seeded Jurgen Melzer playing fifth-seeded Albert Montanes, Ferrero meeting Simon Greul, Monfils facing Mayer and Gimeno-Traver battling Chiudinelli.
