Ex-Raiders QB Russell faces drug charge

Mobile, Ala. -- Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was arrested Monday on a drug possession charge, authorities said.

A spokeswoman for the Mobile County (Ala.) Sheriff's Office said Russell was arrested at his home Monday afternoon where investigators allegedly found codeine syrup without a prescription, the Mobile Press-Register reported.

The investigators were there as part of an undercover probe, authorities said.

Records indicate Russell was booked into the Mobile Metro Jail and released minutes later after making $2,500 bail, the newspaper said. He is set to appear in court on July 20, with a bond hearing scheduled for July 7.

Russell played high school football in Mobile, went on to play at LSU from 2003 through 2006 and was the No. 1 overall draft pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2007.

Russell posted a 7-18 record as a starter. The Raiders released him in May.
