"The best I can say is he's planning on retiring after this year, but we won't know until he tells you guys," The Atlanta Journal-Constitution quoted Cox as saying.
Braves General Manager Frank Wren and team President John Schuerholz were also in on the meeting with Jones, the newspaper said.
Before heading into Turner Field for that meeting, the 38-year-old player told the Journal-Constitution retirement was on the agenda.
"It's obvious it's something I've been thinking about, and that's that," Jones said.
"I need to go through the proper channels. Once those have been taken care of, everyone's questions will be answered."
Jones, nagged by injuries, is hitting .228 with three home runs this season. Two years ago he won the National League batting title and he owns a .306 career average with 429 homers, 1,467 RBI and 2,444 hits since debuting with the Braves on Sept. 11, 1993.
Rookie Jason Heyward, Omar Infante and Brooks Conrad are possible replacements should Jones call it a career.
