Hewitt, the No. 8 seed, blitzed Thiemo De Bakker 6-3, 6-3, losing only eight points on serve. Hewitt also had three service breaks in winning the second-round match.
He next goes against Andreas Beck, who got by Nicolas Kiefer 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4). Kiefer had 16 aces but also 12 double faults.
Wednesday's other second-round matches saw Lukas Lacko rally for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Dominik Meffert and Philipp Petzschner top Viktor Troicki 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Lacko and Petzschner will meet in Friday's quarters.
The first round was completed Wednesday with Alejandro Falla defeating Noam Okun 6-4, 6-3 and Benjamin Becker beating Mikhail Ledovskikh 6-4, 6-2.
The second round is to continue Thursday with top-seeded Roger Federer, who has won his last 26 matches at the event, playing Falla and No. 2-seed Nikolay Davydenko facing Becker.
