Errani wins at rain-plagued Aegon Classic

Birmingham, England -- Fifth-seeded Sara Errani was among second-round winners Wednesday at the Aegon Classic tennis tournament in rainy Birmingham, England.

Errani's match was one of eight completed out of a scheduled of 20 matches. The schedule was overloaded because of rain Tuesday, and storms again Wednesday caused additional backlog.

Among matches suspended was No. 2-seeded Maria Sharapova, who didn't get to play at all Tuesday and built a 4-0 lead in the first set over Bethanie Mattek-Sands before play was called.

Errani piled up seven breaks of serve in a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win over Shenay Perry before the rains came.

Anne Keothavong defeated Pauline Parmentier 4-6, 7-5, 7-5; and Kaia Kanepi advanced when 12th-seeded Elena Baltacha became sick and couldn't continue in the final first-round matches Wednesday.

Sesil Karatantcheva knocked off sixth-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova 6-4, 6-4; and Anna Chakvetadze beat No. 8-seeded Andrea Petkovic by the same score in a pair of second-round upsets. Also losing was 16th-seeded Vania King, who was routed 6-1, 6-2 by Alla Kudryavtseva.

In addition to Errani, seeded players getting through the second round Wednesday were No. 10 Magdalena Rybarikova and No. 13 Angelique Kerber.
