Schiavone, Dementieva make French semis

Paris -- Francesca Schiavone qualified for her first major-tournament semifinal with an upset Tuesday of third-seeded Caroline Wozniacki at the French Open.

Schiavone, seeded 17th, broke Wozniacki's serve six times in a 6-2, 6-3 victory. She hasn't lost a set since the first set of her first-round match. She is the first Italian women's player to reach the semis at the French Open since 1954.

Schiavone had three breaks in each set Tuesday in a steady performance in which she committed just 13 unforced errors and had a 25-10 edge over Wozniacki in winners.

She'll go against fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva in the semifinals. Dementieva rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory Tuesday over 19th-seeded Nadia Petrova.
Petrova jumped to the lead on the strength of three service breaks but Dementieva faced only one other break-point situation in the second and third sets. Dementieva dropped just 12 points -- five on serve -- in the third set in advancing to her second French Open semifinals.

Dementieva has won her last three meetings against Schiavone and is 6-4 overall against the Italian player.

The other French Open semifinal is to be determined Wednesday when world No. 1 Serena Williams goes against seventh-seeded Samantha Stosur and fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic plays unseeded Yaroslava Shvedova.
