V. Williams wins French second-rounder

Paris -- Second-seeded Venus Williams claimed a straight-set win Wednesday and advanced to the third round of the French Open in Paris.

Williams improved to 28-4 on the year with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Arantxa Parra Santonja. Williams had to overcome 21 unforced errors but didn't suffer a service break in the match.

Flavia Pennetta, seeded No. 14, had the most impressive showing of the early matches Wednesday, ripping past Roberta Vinci 6-1, 6-1 in 57 minutes. Pennetta piled up 30 winners.

No. 19-seeded Nadia Petrova was nearly as sharp, defeating Agnes Szavay 6-1, 6-2 while 26th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova got past Varvara Lepchenko 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 and No. 31-seeded Alexandra Dulgheru topped Timea Bacsinszky 6-4, 6-2.

Akgul Amanmuradova beat Johanna Larsson 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in a second-round match between unseeded players.
