Murray played for more than 4 hours in his 4-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 win over French-crowd favorite Richard Gasquet. Murray dropped serve twice in the third set but it appeared Gasquet tired in the lengthy match and Murray capitalized.
Defending champion Roger Federer opened his 2010 French Open run with a straight-set victory. Federer defeated Peter Luczak 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 in a first-round match. Federer committed just 11 unforced errors and faced only one break-point situation.
No. 3-seeded Novak Djokovic was a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 winner over Evgeny Korolev.
No. 12-seeded Fernando Gonzalez also needed four sets in a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Thiago Alves; 13th-seeded Gael Monfils got past Dieter Kindlmann 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2; 14th-seeded Ivan Ljubicic slipped past Yen-Hsun Lu 7-6 (7-5), 7-5, 6-3; and 15th-seeded Tomas Berdych stopped Jorge Aguilar 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, 6-1.
Other seeded winners Monday were No. 17 John Isner, 19th-seeded Nicolas Almagro, No. 20 Stanislas Wawrinka and No. 24 Thomaz Bellucci, No. 25 Marcos Baghdatis and 31st-seeded Victor Hanescu.
No. 21-seeded Tommy Robredo and 27th-seeded Feliciano Lopez were the only seeded losers Monday. Robredo fell 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 to Viktor Troicki and Lopez dropped a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 decision to Julian Reister.
Unseeded players to advance were Olivier Rochus, Taylor Dent, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, Andreas Beck, Lukas Lacko, Marcel Granollers, Carsten Ball, Yuri Schukin, Kei Nishikori, Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr., Pablo Andujar, Leonardo Mayer, Steve Darcis and Mardy Fish.
