U.S. leads in World Tennis group final

Dusseldorf, Germany -- Sam Querrey defeated Jan Hajek Thursday to give the United States a 1-0 lead over the Czech Republic at the ATP World Team Championship.

The winner of the U.S.-Czech Republic showdown will win the Red Group. Querrey defeated Hajek 6-3, 7-5 in 83 minutes. A second singles match and a doubles match will be played Friday to determine the group winner.

In the other Red Group action Thursday, Spain took an unbeatable 2-0 lead over Australia with victories by Nicolas Almagro and Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

France and Argentina finished the day tied at 1-1 in the Blue Group decider.

Jeremy Chardy gave France the lead when he downed Juan Monaco 6-3, 6-4, but Eduardo Schwank came back to tie it with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 decision over Paul-Henri Mathieu.
