Ethier was leading the National League in batting average, home runs and runs batted in when he hurt his finger during batting practice before Saturday's 4-1 Dodgers victory over the Padres.
Team doctors outfitted him with a splint in hopes he could continue to play with the injury, but Dodgers officials said a decision was made Tuesday to give the left-handed hitter time away from the game to heal.
Ethier is the major league leader in batting average with .392 and RBI with 38, and co-leads the National League with 11 home runs.
Los Angeles called outfielder Xavier Paul up from Triple-A Albuquerque to take Ethier's spot on the roster.
