Monfils, seeded 12th, was the only seeded men's player on Monday's schedule and swept past Stephane Robert 6-2, 7-5. Monfils recorded three of his five service breaks in the first set in advancing.
Benjamin Becker turned in the day's most impressive showing, dispatching Carlos Moya 6-0, 6-2 in 63 minutes. Becker won 65 percent of the points in the match and dropped a mere 13 points over seven service games.
Also claiming straight-set, first-round wins were Feliciano Lopez, who defeated Lukasz Kubot 6-3, 6-3; Nicolas Almagro, who stopped Viktor Troicki 6-1, 7-6 (7-3); and Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr., who was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Andreas Seppi.
Leonard Mayer got past Julien Benneteau 6-7 (9-11), 7-5, 6-4; Jurgen Melzer beat Kevin Anderson 6-2, 2-6, 6-4; and Santiago Giraldo rallied for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Philipp Kohlschreiber in the day's other matches.
