49ers sign LB Willis to 5-year extension

San Francisco -- The San Francisco 49ers have signed linebacker Patrick Willis to a five-year contract extension, the team said Tuesday.

While the details of the deal were not disclosed, broadcast reports indicated the extension for the perennial Pro Bowler is worth $50 million.

Willis, 25, has led the NFL in tackles with 467 since being chosen with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2007 draft. He was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year that season and has reached the Pro Bowl in all three years in the league.

"I am very proud of what Pat has been able to accomplish," 49ers head Coach Mike Singletary said. "He is the epitome of what a 49er is all about. ... Before it is all said and done, he may go down as one of the best to play the position."

In his three-year career, Willis has recorded nine sacks, six forced fumbles and four interceptions.
