The move, retroactive to April 7, comes after Young missed his scheduled start in Monday's home opener against Atlanta due to right shoulder tightness. San Diego Manager Bud Black instead tapped Kevin Correia to pitch the opener.
Young, 30, posted a 4-6 record with a 5.21 ERA in 14 starts last season, when he was also plagued by injuries.
San Diego called up right-hander Adam Russell from Triple-A Portland to take Young's roster spot.
