Police: Glitch behind 50 visits to home

Rose Martin, 82, and husband Walter, 83, said officers from the New York Police Department's Identity Theft Squad visited their home Thursday and explained officers from various precincts had come to the house dozens of times seeking suspects and witnesses the couple had never heard of because of a "computer glitch," the New York Daily News reported Friday.

Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne explained the "glitch" came from a citywide computer test in 2002 that used the Martins' address as a test. Browne said he does not know why the address was used.

"It wasn't supposed to stay in (the system)," Browne said. "It's been removed."
Officers told the couple their address is now flagged in the system as an extra precaution requiring police to double-check before visiting the home.
