Nadal reaches Indian Wells semis

Indian Wells, Calif. -- Rafael Nadal, seeking his first tournament title of the year, reached the semifinals Thursday at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif.

Nadal, seeded third, defeated Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

The only final appearance for Nadal this year came in Qatar, where he lost to Nikolay Davydenko. With both Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic having been ousted from this tournament, Nadal is the highest seed remaining.

He will take on Ivan Ljubicic in the semifinals. Ljubicic defeated Juan Monaco 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 and surprised Djokovic in the fourth round Wednesday.

In the other quarterfinals Friday, Tommy Robredo will face Andy Roddick and Andy Murray will take on Robin Soderling.
