Ovechkin suspended for 'reckless hit'

New York-- Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin has been suspended two games without pay for his hit on Chicago's Brian Campbell, NHL officials said Monday.

League officials called the play on the Blackhawks' defenseman during Sunday's 4-3 Washington win "a reckless hit." In the first-period incident, Campbell skated with the puck into his own end and Ovechkin shoved him from behind into the end boards.

Ovechkin received a major penalty and game misconduct. Campbell broke his collarbone on the play and will miss the remainder of the regular season, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Ovechkin is a repeat offender, having also been suspended for two games this season for a knee-to- knee collision with Carolina defenseman Tim Gleason, so under the terms of the NHL's labor contract will forfeit $232,645 in salary.

He is eligible to return Saturday when the Capitals visit the Tampa Bay Lightning.
