French singer-songwriter Ferrat dead at 79

Paris -- French singer-songwriter Jean Ferrat has died at a hospital in the South of France, the BBC said. He was 79.

The cause of his death was not reported.

Ferrat penned about 200 songs, some of which reflected his communist views and were banned from French television in the 1960s, the BBC noted.

Among his hits were "La Montagne," "Potemkine" and "Ma France."
After Ferrat's death was announced, French President Nicolas Sarkozy reportedly praised the artist for his "unyielding conception of French song."
