The Volunteers used an 8-0 run in which Louisiana State went about 6 1/2 minutes without a point in establishing control and advancing. Tennessee will play Mississippi (21-9) in the quarterfinals Friday.
LSU's Storm Warren's field goal with 15:48 to play tied the score at 30-30 but four different Volunteers, including Chism, had baskets while the Tigers went without a point until the 9:20 mark. By then Tennessee was up 38-30 and didn't let LSU closer than five points the rest of the way.
Bobby Maze backed Chism with 14 points but Warren led all scorers with 18 points as he hit nine of his 13 field-goal attempts.
