Notre Dame continued a trend of upsets in the Big East tourney despite scoring only 18 points in the second half and going 8 minutes without a field goal.
Pittsburgh, ranked 16th in the country, was seeded No. 2 in the tournament and followed top-seeded Syracuse and No. 4 Villanova to the exit. Notre Dame will play either West Virginia or Cincinnati in Friday's semifinals.
The Panthers had two chances to tie the game in the closing minute, but after those misses Harangody claimed a rebound and was fouled. His free throws gave him 12 points for the game and boosted Notre Dame to 23-10 for the season.
Tory Jackson also had 12 points for the Irish.
Brad Wanamaker led Pittsburgh with 16 points. Ashton Gibbs, who came into the game averaging more than 16 points per contest, scored just four.
The Panthers, who should receive one of the NCAA Tournament's at-large bids when the 65-team field is announced Sunday, fell to 24-8.
