COL BKB: Marquette 80, Villanova 76

New York -- Lazar Hayward broke a late tie with a 3-point shot that lifted Marquette to an 80-76 victory Thursday over No. 10 Villanova in the Big East Tournament.

It was the second upset of the afternoon session in the tournament quarterfinals. No. 22 Georgetown knocked off No. 3 and top-seeded Syracuse 91-84 and will meet Marquette (21-10) in Friday's semifinals.

Corey Stokes connected on a 3-point shot for Villanova that tied the score at 70-70 with 2:21 to go. Hayward responded on the other end with a 3-pointer of his own 30 seconds later and the lead never changed hands again.

The Golden Eagles' Davis Culliban pushed it to a 5-point game with a pair of free throws but Antonio Pena answered with a jump shot. Howard, however, kept the Wildcats at length with two free throws with 31 seconds to play.

Villanova's Corey Fisher made it 77-74 and Pena, after another Marquette free throw, got the Wildcats within 76-74 with 5 seconds left. But Hayward was fouled and sealed the game with two free throws.

Hayward ended with 20 points, second to teammate Darius Johnson-Odom's 24. Culliban added 17 points and Jimmy Butler 14.

Villanova (24-6) was paced by Stokes's 22 points off the bench and Fisher added 16.
