Germany's trade surplus up in January

Wesbaden, Germany -- Germany's trade surplus grew by 12.6 percent from a year ago in January, the Federal Statistical Office said Wednesday.

A year ago, Germany's trade surplus was 7.1 billion euros, or $9.7 billion.

This year in January, the surplus was 8 billion euros, or $10.9 billion.
Exports in January increased by 0.2 percent, while imports decreased 1.4 percent from a year ago, Statistisches Bundesamt Deutschland said.

From a month ago, the figures "showed opposite trends" the office said, with exports falling 6.3 percent from December to January and imports rising 6 percent.

Germany exported $87.2 billion worth of goods in January this year, including $55.7 billion to European Union countries, more than half of that -- $38.2 billion -- to countries within the eurozone.
