The Labor Department said Friday the unemployment rate in February held at 9.7 percent, after which the Dow Jones industrial average gained 122 points. On Monday, with no major government reports due, the major boards posted fractional gains and narrow losses.
In early afternoon trading, the DJIA shed 7.64 points, 0.07 percent, to 10,558.56. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 0.06 percent, 0.69 points, to 1,139.39
The Nasdaq composite index added 0.31 percent, 7.32, to 2,333.67.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury fell 6/32 to yield 3.706 percent.
The euro rose to $1.3631 from Friday's $1.3633. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 90.36 yen from Friday's 90.35 yen.
In Tokyo, the Nikkie 225 index rose 2.09 percent, 216.96 points, to 10,585.92.
In London, the FTSE 100 index added 0.12 percent, 6.96, to 5,606.72.
