Spain finishes off Swiss in Davis Cup

Logrono -- David Ferrer's straight-set win Sunday shoved two-time defending champion Spain in the Davis Cup quarterfinals and eliminated Switzerland.

Ferrer topped Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 in sealing the best-of-five series victory for Spain and sending the Spaniards into July's Davis Cup quarterfinals against France.

The French claimed a 4-1 win over Germany in their first-round series.

Wawrinka had opened the series Friday with a five-set victory over Nicolas Almagro. But Ferrer beat Marco Chiudinelli in straight sets and the doubles team of Marcel Granollers and Tommy Robredo gave Spain a 2-1 lead going into Sunday's reverse singles.

Ferrer, No. 16 in the world, grabbed control early Sunday against Wawrinka and cashed a pair of first-set break chances in taking the opener. Wawrinka got his lone service break in the second set but Ferrer had two more in winning that set.

Ferrer lost only three points in three service games in the third set while wining 22 points on Wawrinka's 38 serves.

Almagro made the official series score 4-1 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Chiudinelli after Ferrer's victory.

The series win was the Spaniards' 19 consecutive at home.
