Top seed Verdasco bounced from Mexico Open

Acapulco, Mexico -- Top-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain fell Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Mexican Open in Acapulco.

Verdasco went down in straight sets to No. 7 Argentine Juan Monaco, who won by 7-5, 6-3 in the first big surprise of the clay-court tournament. Monaco, the world No. 30, has already had a finals appearance in Santiago, Chile, this year.

It was the first time in six Mexican Open appearances that Monaco has been able to advance to the semifinals. For Verdasco, it was the second defeat in Acapulco, where he was downed in the 2004 final to countryman Carlos Moya.

No. 3 seed Spaniard David Ferrer advanced in his quarterfinal match, beating Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas 7-5, 6-4.
