Polk County investigators said Zachary James Leone, 19, of Salem, was charged with two counts of unlawful manufacture of a destructive device, two counts of disorderly conduct and unlawful sale/use of fireworks after he detonated an explosive device at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, the Salem Statesman Journal reported Tuesday.
Sgt. Mark Garton said the explosion likely would not have been a danger to bystanders unless they were standing very close to the device. He said Leone was attempting to blow up a tree.
Garton said officers found more homemade explosives inside of Leone's home and the suspect is likely to face further charges as authorities study the devices.
He was being held at the Polk County Jail.
