Davydenko, of Russia, needed to come from behind to beat Florent Serra of France 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-1. Tsonga, of France, was ahead of compatriot Michael Llodra 7-6 (11-9) when Llodra -- who won last week at Marseille -- retired due to a hamstring injury.
Davydenko advanced to a second-round match against Michael Berrer of Germany. Tsonga moves on to face Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia.
Sixth-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia dropped Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-2, 6-4 and No. 7 Mikhail Youzhny of Russia eliminated Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.
Other winners on the second day of the tournament included Tommy Robredo and Somdev Devvarman.
Defending Dubai champion Novak Djokovic, seeded second, and third-seeded Australian Open runner-up Andy Murray are scheduled to play in third-round action Wednesday.
