U.S. markets display pent-up demand

New York -- U.S. markets held in positive territory from the opening to the closing bell on Wall Street Tuesday, displaying pent-up demand after a one-day holiday.

By close Tuesday, a day after President's Day, the Dow Jones industrial average added 169.67 points or 1.68 percent to 10,268.81. The Standard & Poor's 500 added 19.36 points or 1.8 percent to 1,094.87. The Nasdaq composite index added 30.66 points or 1.4 percent to 2,214.19.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 2,226 stocks advanced and 511 declined on a volume of 4 billion shares traded.

The benchmark 10-year treasury rose 8/32 to yield 3.665 percent.

The euro rose to $1.3764 from Monday's $1.3601. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 90.10 yen from Monday's 89.98 yen.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index added 0.21 percent, 20.95 points, to 10,034.25.

In London, the FTSE 100 index rose 1.48 percent, 76.59, to 5,244.06.
