Ford lays off 900 with slow Mustang sales

Deaborn, Mich. -- Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday that 900 Michigan workers would lose their jobs due to slow U.S. sales of the Mustang sports car.

Ford said it would cut one shift from its AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Mich., a factory that is jointly owned with Mazda Motor Co.

As such, the plant also produces the Mazda6 mid-sized sedan, the Detroit Free Press reported Tuesday.

But Mustang sales fell 27 percent in 2009 compared with 2008, and Mazda6 sales fell 34 percent.

Ford, which has 600 workers on indefinite layoff, said it would offer most of the Flat Rock workers jobs at other plants. The company previously said it would hire 1,200 workers to produce the Ford Explorer in Chicago and 1,000 workers in Michigan to produce car batteries for electric powered cars.
