Gimeno-Traver claims first-round upset

Buenos Aires -- Daniel Gimeno-Traver knocked off third-seeded Nicolas Almagro in opening-round play Monday at the Copa Telmex tournament in Argentina.

Rain caused one match at the clay-court tournament in Buenos Aires to be suspended and another to be postponed to Tuesday. Of the three that did get completed Monday, Gimeno-Traver's was the most eye-catching.

Gimeno-Traver upending his Spanish compatriot Almagro 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 in 2 1/2 hours. Almargo failed to convert a pair of break-point chances in the second set and Gimeno-Traver battled back to even the match. Gimeno-Traver was much the stronger in the third set, winning 62 percent of the points and losing a mere five points in five service games.

Also Monday, No. 7-seeded Romanian Victor Hanescu stopped Eduardo Schwank 6-3, 7-5 and Portugal's Frederico Gil took out Peter Luczak 6-2, 6-4.

No. 3-seeded Argentine David Nalbandian was leading Potito Starace 6-2 when rain caused play to the halted. The fifth match of the day was to sent eighth-seeded Horacio Zeballos against Gaston Gaudio.
