Jail cancels Netflix subscription

Chicago -- Officials at an Illinois jail said recent budget cuts included canceling the $35 monthly Netflix subscription for prisoners.

Richard Liddle, program manager at Lake County Jail, said the Netflix subscription was paid for with money spent by prisoners at the commissary and the films selected were the likes of "Schindler's List" and "Hotel Rwanda," the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.

"We didn't let the inmates choose them," Liddle said. "Or we'd have been watching '(The Texas) Chainsaw Massacre.'"

Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said the films were a way to "keep everybody chilling out."

"We didn't order anything that's pornographic. But it might not meet the standards of (the) Rev. (Billy) Graham," he said.

He said the monthly Netflix fee was a tiny portion of $2 million in budget cuts.
