Tigers ink Verlander to $80 million deal

Detroit -- Justin Verlander, one of baseball's top right-handers, signed a five-year, $80 million contract extension Thursday, the Detroit Tigers announced.

The deal runs through the 2014 season and averts salary arbitration.

Verlander, 26, compiled a 19-9 record last season with just 63 walks and a major league-leading 269 strikeouts in 35 starts (240 innings).

His performance made him third in the voting for the American League Cy Young Award.

"It's a very happy moment for the organization," Detroit President and General Manager Dave Dombrowski said on the Tigers' Web site.

"I feel like I've grown up in this city," Verlander said. "I've made a name for myself here."

He was the 2006 AL Rookie of the Year and was an American League all-star in 2007 and '09.

He has a 65-43 record in four seasons with Detroit -- 132 career starts (840 innings) -- with 282 walks and 746 strikeouts.
