Cilic and second-seeded Ivan Ljubicic, another Croat, each won first-round matches. Third-seeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer and No. 4-seeded Serb Viktor Troicki claimed second-round wins.
Cilic, coming off a semifinal appearance at the Australian Open and playing in his hometown, blitzed Czech Jan Hajek 6-2, 6-2 in 56 minutes. He saved the lone break point he faced and converted all four times he had Hajek at break point.
Ljubicic got past Frenchman Arnaud Clement 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 behind 11 aces.
Also in first-round action Wednesday, seventh-seeded Ivo Karlovic advanced when fellow Croat Antonio Veic, who was up 5-4 in the first set, withdrew with an injury
Melzer needed just more than an hour to get past Belgian Olivier Rochus 6-2, 6-3, while Troicki topped Kazak Mikhail Kukushkin 7-5, 7-5. Ukrainian Illya Marchenko stopped Coat Ivan Dodig 6-4, 6-2 in another second-round match.
